Tacking on a reply to a 2.5 year old post is unlikely to get you a reply you can use. To get the best visibility, you should create a new topic/thread/Ask a new question and more people will pay attention to it. I have never used a factory restore to fix any problem and will never suggest it - I would instead figure out what the problem(s) is and fix it, but you can do what your heart desires. Before hand, of course you should back up to an external device all you personal data (documents, music, pictures, etc.) because all that stuff of yours is going to be wiped out by that course of action. Although Compaq has a Standard Recovery and a Full System Recovery option, I would not put any of my eggs in either basket, but you might get lucky. You can read more about it here: If you choose a Full System Recovery and it works, you will then have to reinstall all the Microsoft Service Packs and updates, update all your hardware drivers, and then reinstall and reconfigure all your third party applications and then restore the backup you made and hope it all works.

Then you should decide what you are going to do if the factory restore doesn't work or bombs in the middle and your system becomes unusable. How are you going to get your XP reinstalled? Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD? Sounds like a lot of work to me and I would keep a tight grip on your good luck charm the entire time. Plus, you have not provided ANY information that will help you remedy whatever the problem is you are having ('I cannot open files' is not enough information), so when you create you new question, I would do this: Since the Microsoft Answers forum implementation does not prompt for any kind of system information when a new question is asked, we know absolutely nothing about your system. Not knowing fundamental information about a problem prolongs the frustration and agony of resolving these issues. Thank you MS Answers, for making the resolution of simple problems as frustrating and time consuming as possible.
Please provide additional information about your system as best you can: What is your system make and model? What is your XP Version and Service Pack? Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc. Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive (internal or external)?

Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD that is the same Service Pack as your installed Service Pack (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)? What do you see (exactly) that you don't think you should be seeing and when do you see it?
What do you not see that you think you should be seeing? If the system used to work properly, what do you think might have changed since the last time it did work properly?
